What’s the Wedding Lasso Tradition

The wedding lasso tradition has been a costume performed at Catholic and Filipino weddings for centuries. In this post, I will explain more about its meaning, when to place it, how and by whom. At the end, you will also find some ideas how to incorporate your Christian non-church wedding.

THE MEANINING OF THE WEDDING LASSO

The wedding lasso, also known as wedding rope,  symbolizes the unity of husband and wife with God as they embark on their journey together in marriage. The traditional wedding lasso is a long strand of rosary beads. When extended, it forms the shape of an infinity symbol (∞), joined by a crucifix.

WHO CAN PLACE THE WEDDING ROPE AND WHEN

In Hispanic Catholic Masses, the lasso ritual typically is done after the exchange of vows and rings, and the giving of the Wedding Arras-  when the bride and groom kneeling at the altar. Here, the “padrinos de lazo,” or lasso godparents, drape the cord over the couple’s shoulders. Then, it is removed before the couple offers their bouquet to Mother Mary. It’s advisable for the padrinos to practice handling the lasso during the wedding rehearsal, particularly for brides wearing veils or crowns, as the cord can easily become tangled.

HOW TO INCORPORATE IT TO YOUR NON-CHURCH WEDDING

Not having a traditional Catholic wedding doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate the wedding lasso tradition. You can do it in the same sequence suggested above:

  1. Wedding Vows
  2. Exchanging of the Rings
  3. Wedding Arras- to learn more about this wedding tradition, learn more about our Arras Ceremony Guide
  4. Wedding Lasso

Although traditional lassos are typically made of rosary beads, there are more elaborate versions crafted from ribbon, rope, twine, or even fabric flowers. Real floral lassos, though less common, make a striking visual impact. For those interested in crafting their own floral lasso, seeded eucalyptus is recommended for its ability to create beautiful garlands.
