How to Preserve your Wedding Cake

I know how this sounds! But if done correctly, you could be enjoying a tasty piece of your wedding cake on your first anniversary. Trust me!

Many of today’s couples continue to embrace the custom of saving the top tier of their wedding cake. If you’re not familiar with this tradition, couples typically freeze their cake for one year and enjoy it as part of their first wedding anniversary. Because we are talking about a perishable food item, it is important to know how preserve your wedding cake properly!

Ready to take notes? These simple steps, if followed correctly, will protect your wedding cake from freezer burn:

  • As soon as possible, put the top layer of the cake in the freezer for two hours in order to harden the icing.
  • After the two hours, remove the cake and wrap it loosely in plastic several times and then place the layer in the cake box.
  • The cake box should also be wrapped in plastic, and then in foil, and placed back into the freezer. This will preserve the taste and texture of the cake.
  • Two days prior to your one-year wedding anniversary, remove the cake from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator.
  • Remove the cake from the fridge and let it stand at room temperature for about 2 to 3 hours before you plan to eat it.

          • If done properly, your cake should taste just as it did on the day of your wedding!
